 The GIUK Gap, Russian submarines, polar radar -and the fight for control of the Arctic

Pituffik is Greenland’s polar eye. Its radar supports missile warning, missile defense and space surveillance from one of the most strategically important positions in the Arctic.

In the far northwest of Greenland, well above the Arctic Circle, a radar array watches the sky without pause. Its antennas aren't tracking airliners, and they have nothing to do with the weather. They're built to detect the launch of a ballistic missile, follow its trajectory, and identify objects orbiting the Earth. That radar belongs to Pituffik Space Base -the American installation the world knew for decades as Thule Air Base. From that spot, the United States can monitor one of the shortest paths between Eurasia and North America. That's not a geographic accident: if an intercontinental missile were ever launched on a polar trajectory, Greenland would be among the first places on Earth to see it coming.

 

Pituffik carries out three closely linked missions -missile warning, missile-defense support, and space surveillance. The 12th Space Warning Squadron operates a phased-array radar plugged into the network that feeds threat assessments to U.S. Northern Command and NORAD. Another unit maintains contact with American and allied satellites, receiving their telemetry and sending commands. The base also has a year-round runway and a deep-water port -the northernmost operated by the U.S. Department of Defense. On paper, it looks like the edge of nowhere. Strategically, it sits at the center of the system.

 

Greenland listens to what happens above the Arctic, but its importance doesn't stop at the sky. Southeast of the island opens the GIUK Gap, the oceanic corridor running between Greenland, Iceland and the United Kingdom. Beneath those waters pass submarines, cables and the sea lanes on which North Atlantic security depends. Farther north, the seasonal retreat of the ice is opening Arctic routes that for centuries were protected by their own inhospitality.

 

Greenland sits at the intersection of three distinct geographies: the missile geography of the Pole, the naval geography of the GIUK Gap, and the economic geography of Arctic resources. It isn't just the world's largest island. It's an observation platform wedged between North America, Europe and Russia.

 

Whoever controls Greenland doesn't automatically control the Arctic. But without Greenland, it becomes far harder to know what's happening there -which is precisely why, since the start of this year, an American president has made the island the subject of the most sustained territorial pressure campaign Washington has waged against a NATO ally's territory in living memory.

 

 From the periphery to the center.

 

On an ordinary map, Greenland looks isolated and oversized -the Mercator projection inflates its dimensions without conveying its relevance. To understand it, you have to change perspective and look at the globe from above, from the North Pole. From that vantage point, the island isn't on the margins of the Western system. It's the northern hinge of it. To the west, it faces Canada and the approaches to the North American continent; to the east, Iceland and the North Atlantic; to the north, it projects into the Arctic basin, directly across from the routes leading toward Russia.

 

The United States understood this value before it had even formally entered World War II. After Germany occupied Denmark, Washington took on a growing role in defending the island, worried that Berlin might use Greenlandic territory to install weather stations or threaten the North Atlantic sea lanes. Arctic weather data carried direct military weight at the time: knowing in advance what conditions Europe would face meant being able to plan flights, bombing runs, naval operations.

 

That American presence was placed on firmer footing by the defense agreement signed with Denmark in 1951. The Cold War quickly turned Greenland into a load-bearing piece of North American defense architecture. Thule Air Base was built in record time and became a forward point for bombers, refueling and early-warning systems.

 

The position that had been useful for watching the weather during World War II became a position for watching the Soviet Union. The underlying principle never changed: shrink the time available to an adversary, and expand the time available to your own command to react. In a nuclear standoff, a few minutes could be the difference between deterrence and catastrophe. Polar regions, once seen as empty space, entered the most sensitive geography of the Cold War for exactly that reason: the shortest paths between the two superpowers -for bombers and for missiles alike -ran across the Arctic. Ice stopped being a barrier. It became a route.

 The Cold War beneath the ice.

 

Greenland's military history shows how easily scientific research, logistics and strategic planning can blur into one another. In the late 1950s, the U.S. Army built Camp Century inside the ice sheet. Officially, it was a laboratory for studying how to operate in extreme polar conditions -tunnels cut into the ice, living quarters, labs, a hospital, even a small nuclear reactor for power.

 

Behind the scientific cover story sat a far more ambitious plan. Under the name Project Iceworm, military planners studied the feasibility of a vast tunnel network beneath the ice cap through which nuclear missiles could be moved, making them difficult to locate and target. The project never reached operational status -the ice itself moved too much to keep the tunnels structurally sound, and Camp Century was abandoned. The U.S. Army itself now acknowledges that the "scientific" base was cover for that classified plan. Iceworm belongs to the Cold War, but its logic hasn't disappeared. It shows how a seemingly unusable region can suddenly acquire value once some new technology promises to turn it into military infrastructure. And it shows how thin the line between exploration and militarization can be in remote territories far from public scrutiny.

 

Above all, it's a reminder that Greenland has never been an empty space on which outside powers could freely sketch their own strategies. Building Thule Air Base required the forced relocation of the Inughuit community that had lived in the Pituffik area, moved north to Qaanaaq. For the people who actually lived there, grand strategy wasn't an abstraction -it was the loss of land and the upending of a way of life. That memory remains part of the still-complicated relationship among Greenland, Denmark and the United States, and it surfaces every time Washington's current ambitions for the island are discussed in Nuuk. Any analysis that treats the island today as a piece of property, a natural-born base, or a mineral reserve waiting to be tapped repeats the same mistake: it looks at Greenland without seeing Greenlanders.

In 2023, Thule Air Base was officially renamed Pituffik Space Base -a change that wasn't merely symbolic. It recognized the site's Greenlandic name, and at the same time made explicit how far its mission had evolved. During the Cold War, the installation was mainly watching for Soviet bombers and missiles. Today it still carries out strategic warning, but it's also part of the broader U.S. space architecture: its radar can detect intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarine-launched missiles, while its tracking station supports command and control of American and allied government satellites.

 

The polar location offers a particular advantage. Many satellites used for Earth observation, weather forecasting and reconnaissance travel in orbits that pass close to the poles; a station in the Arctic can communicate with those systems more frequently and help monitor how they're functioning. Pituffik doesn't only watch for what might strike North America. It watches the orbital architecture on which communications, navigation, intelligence and military operations all depend.

 

It's hard to imagine a clearer picture of contemporary geography than this. From a territory more than four-fifths covered in ice, with almost no roads connecting its towns, a network of sensors participates in global surveillance. The island's physical isolation doesn't diminish its centrality -in some respects it enhances it, limiting interference, offering an unobstructed vantage point, and allowing systems to be placed far from population centers.

 

That's also why the base has become such a visible symbol of the current standoff. Roughly 150 U.S. service members are stationed at Pituffik today, a fraction of the roughly 6,000 who were there at the height of the Cold War -yet even as the administration has pressed Copenhagen and Nuuk over sovereignty, defense officials have quietly funded upgrades to the base's runway, its port and its facilities, and Vice President JD Vance made a highly publicized visit there in 2025. Modern militarization doesn't always require large garrisons. Sometimes a radar, a runway and a satellite link are enough. A few hundred people, backed by a global technological network, can turn an Arctic coastline into one of the most sensitive nodes in Western defense.

 The GIUK Gap comes back to life.

 

If Pituffik looks mainly toward the sky and the Arctic basin, southern Greenland opens the door to the North Atlantic. This is where the GIUK Gap begins -the maritime threshold that Russian naval units sailing from the Kola Peninsula must cross to reach the open Atlantic. During the Cold War, NATO built a dense network of aerial patrols, acoustic sensors and anti-submarine capability around this corridor, aimed at tracking Soviet submarines before they could disperse into the ocean and threaten the sea lanes linking the United States to Europe.

 

After the Soviet collapse, much of that capacity atrophied -the danger seemed to have faded, and anti-submarine warfare lost urgency. But the corridor's value never depended on the ideology in the Kremlin. It depended on the location of Russian bases, the shape of the North Atlantic, and the West's need to keep transatlantic sea lanes open. Geography simply waited for policy to catch back up with it.

 

Russia's Northern Fleet remains concentrated on the Kola Peninsula. From those bases operate attack submarines and strategic units that form an essential piece of Moscow's nuclear deterrent. NATO therefore has to track two different things at once: the vessels capable of threatening Atlantic sea lanes, and the movements of the units that protect Russia's own missile-carrying submarines.

 

Either way, the GIUK Gap keeps functioning as a filter. It isn't an impermeable barrier, and it doesn't guarantee that every submarine gets located. But it offers a narrower space in which to concentrate sensors, patrol aircraft, ships and intelligence capacity.

 

Greenland forms its western flank. Iceland sits at its center. The United Kingdom and its northern islands close the passage toward Europe. These aren't separate territories -they're components of a single system.

 

NATO now treats the Arctic as a region of rising strategic competition. Russia's military buildup, China's interest in northern resources and shipping routes, and the need to protect communications between North America and Europe have pulled the High North back to the center of alliance planning.

 

The question isn't only how to find submarines. It's knowing what's happening across an immense space before some anomaly turns into a crisis.

 

 An ocean that has to be heard.

 

The phrase "the island that listens to the world" isn't only about Pituffik's radar. Around Greenland, listening is a strategic function in the most literal sense. Underwater, sight is nearly useless. Distance, temperature and salinity all bend the way sound travels. Submarines are hunted through acoustic signatures, anomalies, patterns of movement: every vessel tries to minimize its own noise, and every surveillance system tries to separate an artificial signal from the ocean's natural background hum.

 

Changes in the Arctic environment complicate that balance. As seasonal ice retreats, some areas become more accessible -but not necessarily easier to monitor. Human activity generates more noise, water conditions shift, and regions once protected by their sheer inaccessibility now see more traffic from military vessels, commercial ships and research craft alike.

 

The same waters carry undersea cables, energy infrastructure and communications systems. Not all of them cross the GIUK Gap directly, but the entire North Atlantic has become a single network in which military security and civilian continuity can no longer be separated.

 

A submarine doesn't need to attack a convoy to exert pressure. The mere possibility that it could approach a cable or operate near a shipping lane is enough to force an adversary to commit resources, raise its surveillance posture, and live with uncertainty. It's the classic gray-zone model: the threat stays below the threshold that would justify an open response, but it produces strategic consequences anyway.

 

 New routes don't erase the ice.

 

Climate change is often presented as the key that will finally throw the Arctic open to shipping. It's a vivid image, but a misleading one. Shrinking ice cover can lengthen navigable seasons and make some routes more accessible without turning the North into an easy sea to cross. Drifting ice, extreme weather, thin rescue capacity, few ports and steep insurance costs will keep weighing on operations there. Arctic shipping won't simply replace Suez or Malacca. It may, however, open additional options -especially for moving resources extracted in the far north, and for activity that coastal states can control directly. That prospect alone is enough to change strategic calculations.

 

Russia treats the Northern Sea Route as a pillar of both its economic development and its security. The route runs largely along the Russian coast and links Arctic deposits to markets in Asia and Europe. Moscow has invested in icebreakers, ports, airfields and military installations able to sustain a presence along that corridor. China, though not an Arctic state, watches the region as a potential source of energy, minerals and new communication lines. Beijing can't change its own geographic position, but it can try to work around its limits through investment, scientific research and economic ties -an approach Washington has watched with open unease, and one that features prominently in the Trump administration's own public case for pressing Denmark and Nuuk over the island's future.

 

Greenland sits in front of this competition without being a mere spectator to it. New routes and rising activity across the High North can create economic opportunity, but they also raise pressure on infrastructure, on the environment, and on the island's own political choices. When a region becomes more accessible, it doesn't automatically become more free. Often, it becomes more contested.

 Resources -and the risk of a new dependency.

 

Beneath Greenland's rock sit rare earths, graphite, zinc, iron, molybdenum and other minerals considered critical to the energy transition, to electronics, and to the defense industry. Their presence has fed the idea that the island could become one of the West's alternatives to mineral supply chains dominated by China -an argument American officials, including Trump himself, have made explicitly and repeatedly this year. Even here, though, the gap between geological potential and economic reality is wide. Finding a deposit isn't the same as being able to mine it profitably: it takes power, ports, roads, workers, capital and years of permitting. Arctic conditions raise costs, while the fragility of the environment forces trade-offs that can't be waved away as a footnote.

 

The mineral composition itself can create political friction: some rare-earth deposits are bound up with uranium, whose extraction Greenlandic law restricts beyond certain thresholds. The island's government retains control over mining activity and has insisted that projects meet environmental, health and social standards -a posture that has occasionally put Nuuk at odds with an American administration eager to move faster. That caution points to the real fault line in the resource competition. For Greenland, minerals could be a path toward greater economic self-sufficiency and, eventually, broader political autonomy. But financial dependence on a single outside investor -whether American, Chinese or European -risks undercutting the very independence that mineral development is supposed to build.

 

The real question, then, isn't only who extracts the rare earths. It's who builds the port, who finances the road, who buys the output, and who controls the technology needed to separate and refine the material. The visible mine is only the beginning. The real structure of power sits in the contracts and dependencies built up around it.

 

 Greenland is not for sale.

 

The strategic competition over the island is often told as a contest among Washington, Copenhagen, Moscow and Beijing. That's an incomplete picture -it pushes to the margins the people who will actually have to live with the consequences of those decisions: Greenlandic society itself, whose leaders and shopkeepers have spent much of this year hanging "Greenland is not for sale" signs in Nuuk's windows. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark but enjoys broad self-government. Copenhagen retains authority over foreign policy and defense, while Nuuk administers most domestic affairs, including mineral resources. Greenland's Self-Government Act also recognizes the Greenlandic people's right to determine their own future and lays out a negotiated path toward independence, should they choose it.

 

The result is a genuinely layered sovereignty. The island's security involves Denmark and NATO; operations at Pituffik depend on the 1951 defense agreement with the United States; economic and social choices run through the Greenlandic government directly. None of those three dimensions can be separated from the others -which is exactly what has made Secretary of State Marco Rubio's recent rounds of talks with Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers so delicate, and why Trump's own framing of a Davos "framework" agreement in January left so much deliberately unresolved.

 

For Washington, Greenland is a piece of North American defense. For Copenhagen, it's what makes the Kingdom of Denmark an Arctic power. For Nuuk, it is first and foremost a homeland that has to balance development, environmental protection, and the aspiration to decide its own future. The powers see a platform. Greenlanders see a society.

 

That difference in perspective will be decisive. The more the island's strategic value grows, the more leverage Nuuk gains to negotiate investment, military presence and international relationships on its own terms. But the risk also grows that Greenland gets described only in terms of what it can offer others: position, minerals, radar, access to the Arctic. Geography can hand a territory power. It doesn't guarantee that the people who live there are the ones who get to use it.

 

 The real base and the fictional one

 

In the world of The Naacal Protocol -Code 211, Base Krigan is an extreme version of the same logic that makes Pituffik strategic. Not because the two installations should be confused with one another, but because both are built around the same question: what can be seen from a place the rest of the world treats as empty? In the High North, a base doesn't need to sit near the battlefield. Its value lies in its ability to anticipate one -it can hear a submarine before it reaches the Atlantic, track a missile in the first minutes of flight, talk to a satellite, watch a route an adversary might use. Base Krigan belongs to fiction. The geography that makes it plausible is real.

 

Greenland demonstrates that the most important installations aren't necessarily the ones with the most troops, but the ones sitting at the point where different trajectories converge. Pituffik links space to missile defense, the Arctic to North America, a remote region to a global command network. The GIUK Gap does the same thing at sea: it turns an ocean expanse into a threshold, and a handful of islands into nodes in a surveillance system. The gray zone forms precisely in the territory separating those two functions: what can be observed and what can be attributed, what is civilian and what could become military, what formally belongs to one state and what has become indispensable to the security of many others.

 

 The island that can no longer hide

 

For centuries, the ice sheet protected Greenland from the world's attention. Today, it's doing the opposite. Retreating ice makes the island's routes, resources and vulnerabilities more visible. Technologies that shrink distance raise the value of its position. Great-power competition turns every new piece of infrastructure into a geopolitical choice -and every visit by a U.S. vice president, every new port survey, every mining permit now gets read in Washington, Copenhagen, Moscow and Beijing as a signal about who is winning. An airport stops being just an airport once it can receive military aircraft. A port stops being just a port once it sits along a future Arctic route. A mine stops being just a mine once it produces materials essential to radar systems, batteries, missiles and satellites. A research station stops being purely scientific once it collects data in a region militaries need to understand.

 

None of this means every project conceals a military plan. It means that in Greenland today, almost no major piece of infrastructure can still be judged solely on its stated purpose. The island listens to the world through Pituffik's radar, through the sensors that monitor the ocean, through the stations that talk to space. But the world, in turn, is watching Greenland, trying to work out what role it will play in the next architecture of power.

 

The answer won't depend only on the number of Russian icebreakers, on Chinese intentions, or on NATO's own plans -or, for that matter, on how far an American president is willing to push. It will depend on whether Greenlanders can convert the island's strategic position into real political autonomy, without letting this new wave of international attention reproduce the old forms of dependency. Greenland was long treated as a land too remote to shape history. Today, it has become the place from which you can hear history arriving.
